Top Flower Picks this August

Below Triangle Nursery have put together the Top 5 Flowers this August to help plan for an upcoming event or wedding.

(1 ) Sunflower

Helianthus, or as we commonly know as the Sunflower. This is because the large yellow flower heads resemble the Sun and the flowers twist to follow the Sun from the East to West during the day time. If you would like to learn more about Sunflowers, click here. Sunflowers are in their height of their season now, but are typically available from early May through to October (with limited availability during the rest). The most common is the Sunflower Sunrich Orange, but there are many different types incl. Teddy Bear, Annuus Premier Lemon, Flame etc.  Sunflowers work beautifully in bouquets, bridal bouquets and table arrangement, however they are too large for creating a buttonhole. Therefore, I would suggest the Sunflower Sonja (Mini) or Chrysanthemum Santini Techda Twiga for a similar effect.

(2 ) Dahlia

Dahlias are famous for their bright, cheerful flowers with waxy petals. In Japan the Dahlia is called Tenjikubotan which translates to ‘Peony of India’. Dahlias are native to Central America, Colombia and Mexico and are commonly grown as garden plants. The Aztecs grew the dahlia for food, ceremonial purposes and for decoration. If you would like to learn more about Dahlia’s, just click here.

Dahlia’s are typically available from July through to October (depending on weather growing conditions, they have been known to be available as early as May). The Dahlia’s are available in a range of different bright colours from vibrant hues (pink, yellow, orange, etc), through to subtle, blush tones, through to dark, romantic black, red and purples. Click here to Find More. Chrysanthemums Blooms work well as a substitute for Dahlia’s as they have a similar shape and look and are available in a brilliant range of colours.

(4 ) Celosia

Celosia, (otherwise known as Cockscomb), are a genus of the amaranthus family Amaranthaceae and are native to Africa. The name ‘celosia’ is derived from the Greek word ‘kelos’, meaning ‘fire’. This is because of the plume shaped flowers that resemble a flame in some varieties. Click here to learn more about Celosia.  This flower is available in vibrant colours from pink, orange, yellow, greens and purple.

Celosia is grown commercially for the Flower Trade in two forms:

  • Plumes – celosia varieties with a single feathery, flame like flower and,
  • Brains – celosia varieties with a single large, crinkly flower that resembles a brain

(5 ) Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are one of the most spectacular flowers available on the wholesale flower markets. Originating from Southeast Asia, hydrangeas are available in a huge range of stunning colours, from elegant whites, pastel hues, to vibrant pinks and vintage classics.  Hydrangeas sold as cut flowers are grown under glass, and as a result, have much cleaner blooms & glossier foliage than outdoor plan.

Interesting Fact:  Hydrangeas are unique because as the season progresses the colour of the flowering bloom changes from the original plain colour. The petals takes on other colours depending on the type and amount of minerals that the plant’s vascular system has taken up. For example, if the plant absorbs aluminium, pink blooms will change to blue & all shades in between. These changing blooms are called ‘Classic’
